You’ve decided to do your part for the environment and save money on your power bill by switching to solar panels. There are many people who are doing the same. Not only are solar panels good to have, but they’re pretty sturdy. Still, even the sturdiest material has a weakness. Hail and falling debris can crack your panels. When this happens, you’ll be glad that your manufacturer gave you a solar panel warranty.

You would have to pay for the repairs out of your own pocket otherwise. Before you cash in that warranty, it’s important to know what it is and what it covers. Keep reading to learn more.

1. What’s a Warranty?

First things first, what is a solar panel warranty? It’s a promise from the manufacture of your panels that if something goes wrong, they’ll cover the repairs. You won’t have to pay a dime out of your own pocket.

The solar panel warranty period usually runs up to about 10-12 years. Some of them extend out to 25. You’ll need to check with the manufacturer to get the specifics.

There are two different types of warranties that we’re going to go over. These are performance and product warranties.

2. Performance Warranty

A performance solar warranty policy states that your panels will produce electricity that exceeds or is equal to a certain amount. We will say that over the years, the panel’s performance in this regard will waver a little, but it shouldn’t be enough to pose a problem. It never dips down below 10% or so.

If it does, that means there’s a problem with one or more of your panels. The manufacturer should be willing to find the problem children and fix them without any extra cost to you.

3. Product Warranty

Product warranties are also known as manufacturer warranties. These protect you from any kind of defects. A good example of this is faulty wiring or if the panel wears out way before it should.

You will need to read over the fine print for even the best solar panel warranty. Sometimes the manufacturer will charge you for the labor of climbing onto the roof to fix the panel. The repair itself will still be free, though.

4. Do You Need the Warranty?

This is one of the most common solar panel questions that gets asked. The answer is that it depends. In some cases, your homeowner’s insurance will take care of the repairs, preventing you from needing additional coverage.

If your insurance company doesn’t have this feature, go ahead and spring for a product with a warranty. A lot of times, if one panel goes out, all the ones adjacent to it will go out as well. You can imagine how expensive that would be to fix.
