In 2019, there were about 1,118,696 burglaries according to the FBI. With this number so high, you must do your due diligence in keeping your house safe. You don’t want to become a statistic, do you?
When you’re going on vacation with your family, unfortunately, this isn’t always at top of your mind. You are excited about leaving and most likely missing some things to keep your home safe.
If you’re not sure where to start, we’ve got your back. It will only take a few minutes at most to secure your home. Let’s lock in what you need to do below.
1. Lock All Windows and Doors
Your first order of defense when you leave the house for an extended period is locking all windows and doors. To keep your house safe, you need to think like a burglar. Unlocked windows and doors are an easy target for the prying eye.
When you’re home alone or with family, it’s good practice to keep them locked. When you leave the house to run errands, double-check doors and windows on the first floor.
2. Upgrade Door Locks
An even better way to keep your home safe is to upgrade door locks. These days, you can keep track of entryways, doors, and windows with sensors. These sensors can notify you if something is left ajar.
When you upgrade your house security, you will be able to rest that much easier when away. Smart locks have the advantage of scheduled times for locking automatically.
Upgrading and changing your locks is never a bad idea. You want to make sure all exterior doors have at least a deadbolt. This way, intruders will have a much tougher time when attempting break-ins.
3. Have a Home Security System
To take it a step further, you’ll want to install a home security system. To keep your house safe, you want added layers of protection. A security camera for instance can alert you when there is suspicious movement on your porch, front or back yard.
If an intruder enters your home, you will be alerted too. Some may even alert law enforcement on your behalf.
4. Outdoor Lighting
To keep your home safe at night, having outdoor lights installed will keep burglars away. Burglars hate to be on display, so you will scare them with some lights.
You don’t want to have your lights on all the time. Instead, opt for motion-detecting floodlights. These will illuminate the yard and catch the intruder off guard.

Keeping your house safe when you’re away doesn’t need to rattle your brain. There are simple measures you can take to keep your home and belongings out of a burglar’s possession.
