CBD Dosage Guide: How Much Should You Take?

You’ve heard a lot about the great benefits of CBD. Whether it’s anxiety, chronic pain, sleep disorder, depression, or other ailments, many people are now turning to Cannabidiol (CBD) products to relieve symptoms of their ailments. And better still, cannabis has gained a lot of legal terrain in many states in the U.S and Canada, which means the government is listening to medical experts and is seeing the value and benefits of cannabis – including CBD. 

But how much CBD should you take? Is there a limit? If so, what happens when you exceed that limit? While we’re not medical professionals, we can help answer some of the most common questions.

There are several factors that affect how much CBD you need to take in order to obtain the relief you need. Note that each of us is unique, we have different body chemistry, different genetics and lifestyle, which means that CBD dosing can be different for every person.  

  • Weight & Height 

To put it simply, the more you weigh, the more CBD you will need to take in order to benefit from the actual effects. When ingested, vaporized, or smoked, CBD interacts with the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system. The ECS, or endocannabinoid system in our body, is responsible for multiple neuronal functions in our body, including motor coordination, control of movement, memory and learning, emotion, and motivation. 

The rate at which CBD is absorbed in the body and gets metabolized depends on your weight and height. This process varies in users who weigh more versus those who weigh less.

For instance, if you’re a taller or heavier person, you will need a higher concentration of CBD. The recommended dosage is 0.2mg-0.7mg of CBD per pound of body weight. In order to get an ideal dosage range, multiply your weight by 0.2mg and increase the dosage as needed. 

  • Age 

In order for CBD to act effectively, the body must first break the compound down. That requires the metabolism to perform at a great capacity, which splits Cannabidiol into smaller parts, making it easier for them to travel throughout the body. As we age, our metabolism slows down, so the older you get, the longer it may take for you to feel the effects of CBD, no matter if that’s tincture oils or edibles like delta 8 gummies. So, it’s important to find your favourite mood of consumption and give your body the time it needs to fully absorb CBD. 

On the other hand, the younger you are, the faster your metabolism is likely to be. You will be able to feel the effect much faster, which could mean you need to take CBD more often to sustain the side effects. 

  • The product type 

There are numerous CBD products on the market. While tinctures and oils are the most popular, there are several other products, such as: 

  • Capsules 
  •  Topicals 
  • Gummies 
  • Beverages
  • Bath bombs 

While you’ll most likely be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of CBD, it’s important to focus less on finding the best CBD and instead look for one that meets your needs. 

For instance, if you’re looking for immediate relief, you will want to consider CBD capsules, tinctures, or any other edible product. For long-lasting relief, however, you will need to consider full-spectrum CBD products.

Increasing your CBD dosage

It’s a good idea to start on a lower dosage of CBD to make sure you don’t experience any negative reactions. While Cannabidiol is generally a safe compound, occasionally, users report fatigue or appetite changes.

Keeping a log of how much CBD you take and how you feel can also be helpful. You can slowly increase the dosage if you don’t notice much effect. If you’re using CBD to treat your sleep problems, track how long it took you to fall asleep, how often you wake up at night, how long you sleep, and how you feel in the morning. Using sleeping apps to track basic information might also help you assess your sleep cycle. 

There are many notable benefits of CBD, such as stress relief, pain relief, being able to sleep better and faster, but one of the most common effects of Cannabidiol is a sense of calmness. This might be especially helpful if you’re experiencing anxiety. 

The recommended dosage of CBD oil for mild-to-moderate anxiety or nervousness is between 15 and 35 mg per day. As with all people suffering from anxiety, you should expect more potent effects from a consistent dosage that allows Cannabidiol to build up in the bloodstream. 

For some users, a higher dose has been shown to be efficient in lowering anxiety symptoms. In a 2015 CBD trial, the authors found that experiments using significant doses ranging from 300 to 600 mg were most efficient. 

What happens when you exceed the normal CBD amount?

While CBD is generally safe, not for nothing experts are telling you to start with a low dosage if you’re a beginner. Surpassing the recommended dosage can result in five typical side effects: dry mouth, low blood pressure, loss of appetite, and tiredness.   While these effects will only last while CBD is in your system, it’s important not to exceed the normal amount.

Remember, if you’ve never used CBD before, we recommend starting with smaller doses and gradually increasing as needed. Everyone’s body is different, so if you don’t see the results right away, continue your daily dosage for three weeks and pay attention to the changes you see in your body.
