You might think that interior design in the smallest room of the house isn’t important, but a survey of bathroom habits done by Contractor Magazine found that we spend 30 minutes every day in the bathroom. For many, the bathroom is a place to relax, soak in the tub and unwind at the end of a long day at work.
It is worth really spending time making a design feature of your bathroom. Taking influence from vintage fashion and decor, you can transform your smallest room into a wonderful sanctuary, with some great elements from a bygone era.
Accessorize your space
Lots of plastic bottles of shampoo and shower gel don’t really scream vintage and can also look extremely untidy in your bathroom. So ditch the plastic and decant your products into beautiful bottles that you would like to have out on display. Decorating with vintage perfume bottles will give your bathroom a sense of elegance.
Go for bottles that have an iridescent shine that will catch the light. You could even decant your bathroom cleaning spray into a vintage atomizer bottle that you would happily leave out – much nicer than plastic.
Flooring is key
Laying down some good-quality flooring is key when you are going for a vintage look in your bathroom. Modern linoleum patterns will detract from your overall look. Instead go for classic black and white diamond checkered tiles, or neutral-colored hex tiles. Polished wooden floors are also a good look for a vintage bathroom, and you can even lay down an antique rug to complete the effect, just make sure that the rug is properly secured and doesn’t slip.
When you are fitting out your vintage bathroom, go for a freestanding tub – they are not only luxuriously comfortable, they will also never go out of fashion. A square sink with a high pedestal is also a good option for a classic, chic bathroom. Even if you have a modern bath and sink, it is worth seeking out vintage faucets and fittings to complete your look – these can give your bathroom an authentic feel. You can also fit a brushed copper or brass shower head to modern shower plumbings.
Your bathroom is the perfect room to relax and unwind. You can use vintage ideas from yesteryear to help inspire your chic design.
