Sharing is caring!

Getting a good night’s sleep is essential for fostering physical health, emotional fortitude, and mental well-being. One of the most important components of restful sleep is having the right mattress. Of course, keeping a mattress in top-notch shape is the key to ensuring it stays comfortable and lasts as long as possible. Moving the mattress safely and properly is an integral component of the process.

Moving a Mattress the Right Way

Whether you’re moving the mattress from the store to your home or from one house to another, having the right tools and knowledge to do the job properly will help. First of all, remember that no one should try to do the job alone. You could hire professional moving services to do it for you or enlist the help of a friend or relative.

Secondly, be sure to purchase a mattress bag and have ratchet straps or other types of tie-downs to hold the mattress in place while it’s being transported. Consider using a hand truck or dolly to help move the mattress as well. Then, proceed through the following steps.

How to Move a Mattress in 8 Simple Steps

1) Eliminate Obstacles

Dragging a mattress through the house and outside to a waiting truck may seem simple enough in theory. Once you get started, though, it generally becomes much more complex than expected. Any number of obstacles could get in the way of progress, such as hallway tables, closed doors, tight corners, and problematic throw rugs

. Before trying to move the mattress, decide exactly how you’re going to get it outside and into the truck and eliminate any hurdles that might hamper your efforts.

2) Get the Moving Vehicle Ready

In addition to removing obstacles in the house and clearing the path to the moving truck, be sure the vehicle is ready to receive the mattress. Open its loading doors or drop the tailgate on the pickup truck.

Make sure no other cargo is in the way of the mattress. Be sure there aren’t any sharp objects in the truck that could damage the mattress, too. These preliminary measures will clear the way, so all you have to do is get the mattress outside and into its transport vehicle.

3) Cover the Mattress

Mattresses can easily get dirty or torn while they’re being moved. Mattress bags help reduce the risk. When you take the mattress off of the bed or out of the store, lay it flat on the floor or prop it up against a wall. Then, slide it carefully into a mattress bag and make sure the bag is properly sealed.

If it’s damaged in any way, cover the tears or holes with duct tape or another type of protective material. When moving a mattress off of a bed, be sure to avoid any moving ceiling fans. This is a common oversight.

4) Time to Lift

Once the mattress is covered, it’s time to pick it up. Do so carefully, and lift with your legs rather than your back to avoid injury. This is where having a helper comes in handy.

5) Hand Trucks and Dollies

If possible, consider using hand trucks or a moving dolly to lighten the load while moving a mattress. Dollies tend to be better for this type of task because they offer multi-directional moving. Place the mattress on the dolly with its longest edge down.

6) Load the Mattress

Once you maneuver the mattress through doorways and out to the vehicle, slide it carefully into place. Hopefully, you’ve already checked to be sure there aren’t any bolts, screws, or other sharp objects in the bed or box of the truck that could tear the mattress.

7) Secure the Mattress

This is where the tie-downs or ratchet straps come into play. Whether you’re transporting the mattress upright or lying down, secure it in place. This will keep it from sliding, flopping around, or flying away while in motion.

8) Transport with Care

As you’re driving the mattress to its destination, be sure to drive carefully and maybe a bit more slowly than usual. Try to avoid hard braking and sudden acceleration. This is especially important if you’re moving the mattress in a pickup truck or strapped to the top of a vehicle.

Enjoy Your Perfectly Preserved Mattress

Those are the steps for safely moving a mattress. Following these measures will help keep the mattress in good condition and prevent any back injuries or other damages along the way. Once the mattress is in place at its final destination, you’ll be able to enjoy many good nights of sleep to come.
