What makes this Italian Stromboli so great is how versatile it is. You can stuff it with whatever fillings your heart desires—maybe some fresh veggies, extra cheese, or even a bit of sausage.

It’s super easy to make, too! You roll out your dough, load it with all those delicious fillings, then bake it to golden perfection.

➤  Experiment with fillings: Swap out the pepperoni for your favourite deli meats, or add veggies like bell peppers or onions for more variety.

If you want extra flavour, brush the inside of the dough with a bit of garlic butter before adding the cheese.


Ingredients

For the dough:

1 1/2 cups of warm water

2 teaspoons of sugar

1 packet (7g) of active dry yeast

3 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons of olive oil

1 teaspoon of salt

For the filling:

● 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, shredded

● 1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese, grated

● 1/2 cup of pepperoni (or other Italian meats like salami or ham)

● 1/2 cup of sliced mushrooms (optional, but they add great flavour)

● 1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning

Olive oil, for brushing

● 1/2 cup of marinara sauce, for dipping

Finely chopped parsley, for garnish


Directions

1. Make the dough:

● In a bowl, combine warm water and sugar, then sprinkle the yeast over the top. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, until the mixture is frothy.

● In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt, then make a well in the centre.

● Pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir everything together until it forms a dough.

● Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, until it’s smooth and elastic. If it’s too sticky, add a little extra flour.

● Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

2. Roll out the dough:

● Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle shape.

● Aim for a thickness of about 1/4 inch. You want enough room to fit all the fillings without it spilling out!

3. Layer the fillings:

● Sprinkle the mozzarella and Parmesan evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.

● Next, layer on the pepperoni, and then sprinkle the mushrooms and Italian seasoning evenly across. This is where the magic happens, so don’t skimp on the flavour!

4. Roll it up:

● Carefully roll the dough into a log, starting from one of the long sides.

● Pinch the edges to seal it tightly. Tuck the ends in so nothing escapes while baking.

5. Brush with olive oil:

● Lightly brush the entire Stromboli with olive oil. This will help give it that lovely, golden, crispy crust we all love.

● You can also sprinkle a bit of extra Italian seasoning on top for more flavour.

6. Slice and bake:

● Using a sharp knife, slice the Stromboli into 6-8 pieces. Lay them flat on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

● Pop them in the oven at 200°C (about 400°F) for 20-25 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling and slightly browned at the edges.

7. Serve:

● Let the Stromboli cool for a few minutes before cutting into it.

● Serve with marinara sauce on the side for dipping and garnish with finely chopped parsley for a fresh pop of colour and flavour.
