A home burglary takes place every 15 seconds in the United States. If you do the math, that’s over 3,000 robberies per day!

Fortunately, there are several things that you can do to protect yourself. First and foremost, you want to keep your doors and windows locked.

Consider adding motion sensor lights around the exterior and if you can, invest in an indoor security system. Not only will it deter crime, but it’ll lower your homeowner’s insurance as well.

Keeping an Eye on Things: 3 Tips for Choosing the Best Indoor Surveillance Camera

1. Consider the Video Quality

Video quality is super important when it comes to choosing a home security camera. Ideally, you want a video resolution of 1080p or higher; that’ll provide enough detail so that you can easily recognize an individual’s clothing and facial features.

You also want to consider the field of view. It’ll determine how much area you’re able to monitor with the camera. For example, you might want a wider viewing angle if you’re installing a video doorbell.

And try to get something with night vision (e.g. ADT indoor camera). That way, you’ll still get visible images even after the sun goes down.

2. Consider Video Storage

The home surveillance camera should have at least 32GB of local storage. That’ll give you enough space to record a couple of weeks’ worth of videos.

Cloud video storage is another option. It’ll let you save your video clips to the cloud, which you can easily access via the internet. Not to mention that it’ll make sharing footage with others easier.

Keep in mind, however, that you will have to pay extra for these services. With that said, they’re usually not that expensive (most security cameras offer subscription-based cloud storage programs for less than $10 a month).

3. Check For Additional Features

If you have the budget, consider getting a camera with a motion detection feature; it’ll be able to identify and notify you of people, animals, and other objects that it sees. If anything, it’ll make it easier to manage video storage (most will only record when movement is detected).

And make sure that it comes with a mobile app—that way, you’ll be able to control the camera easily with your phone. For example, you can use it to receive notifications, adjust settings, and view video footage.

Some cameras also come with a pan-tilt-zoom feature, which allows you to adjust their position remotely.
