Moving, as a concept, feels exciting – you’re starting a new chapter of your life in a new home and opening yourself up to all sorts of new opportunities and experiences.
In reality, however, moving isn’t quite so rosy. The excitement is still there, but so is a mile-long to-do list and days upon days of organizing and packing.
That said, by using a few helpful moving tips, you can make the process feel far less overwhelming. To learn how to make moving away a breeze, just keep reading!
Get and Stay Organized
The first step to any successful move is to get organized. The best way to do so is by creating a moving folder, whether it be a physical folder or one on your computer.
That said, we recommend a physical folder, if possible; it’s more reliable, as you don’t have to worry about dead batteries along the way.
In this folder, keep any and all moving documents you receive, meaning receipts, records of agreement, service paperwork, etc.
Pare Down Your Belongings
It can be tempting to take the lazy approach, throw everything you own in boxes, and call it a day, but this will only make your job more difficult down the line. Instead, take the time to pare down your belongings before you pack.
By selling or donating anything that you no longer want or use, you can cut down on clutter in your new home and enhance that fresh start feeling.
Start Packing Early
If you take only one of these preparation tips, let it be this one. Packing and prepping for your move early is essential to minimizing stress. By waiting until the last minute, you’re setting yourself up for a horrible experience.
You don’t have to live in an empty house for months, but make a point to do a little packing or organizing every day, starting as soon as possible.
Schedule Services for Your New Home
You have enough on your plate without worrying whether or not you’re going to have power in your new home. When you have an exact moving date, go ahead and schedule services for your new place.
Contact service companies in your new town and schedule for electricity, water, heat, and internet to be turned on as close to your move-in date as possible. Then, keep records of all your requests and installation dates in your moving folder.
Pack an Essentials Bag
Before you get too far into your packing, be sure to set aside an essentials bag. This should be filled with enough clothes for the journey, necessary electronics and chargers, toiletries, medications, paperwork, and any other items you’ll need.
This is especially important if you’re making a long-distance trip, such as moving abroad. The last thing you want is to be stuck in a different country without your essential belongings.
