Composition roofs are known for being environmentally friendly and have very little impact on the environment. This is due to the roof shingles being made from recycled materials that are no longer being used. Composition roofs have many benefits; they are cost-effective, damage resistant and come in a variety of styles and colours. These are the 3 types of composition shingles that you can use on your roof.
A residential roofing company will refer to a shingle as 3-tab because the shingle is made up of three individual tabs. Each tab is 12 inches wide, and they are all layered on top of each other. 3-tab shingles are the most common type of shingle that is used by a residential roofing company. This type of composition shingle is relatively cheap compared to other shingles and are easy to replace if need be.
They also last for a long period of time and come in warranties of up to 20 to 30 years. 3-tab roofing shingles are asphalt-based products that work by shedding rainwater to the shingle that is layered below it. This means that rainwater flows off your roof easily. Although these shingles are the least expensive composition option, they are the least durable due to them being so light, therefore they may not be a good option if you live in an area that experiences a lot of extreme weather conditions.
Lamination shingles, also known as dimensional shingles, are a close second behind 3-tab shingles when it comes to popularity. Lamination shingles are slightly more durable than 3-tab shingles, as they are at least double the thickness. This type of composition roof shingles is built with a heavier base mat than 3 -tab shingles and have multiple layers of recycled materials.
This means that they last for longer periods of time and rarely need replacing. Laminate shingles typically come with a warranty of 30 to 50 years and are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions. They are slightly more expensive than other types of composition roof shingles, but for the price, you are guaranteed a lot for your money, as they are extremely durable and reliable.
Lastly, there are architectural shingles. It has been said that architectural shingles are the best form of composite roofing shingles that you can purchase. These shingles are usually bigger than 3-tab and laminated shingles, meaning they are even more durable and strong. Architectural shingles come with much better warranties, and never have to be replaced.
They also come with additional features that 3-tab and laminated shingles do not offer. These additional features include resistant coating, which acts as a protective layer on the shingles. This resistant coating will protect the shingles from moss, mould and algae growing on them. These can often cause damage to a roof and often discolour shingles, meaning you get a lot of benefits for your money with architectural shingles.
