1. Think about functionality

Efficiency precedes all when it comes to kitchen planning. It is crucial that we central the design based on how we actually use the limited space provided. Because more often than not, aspiring kitchen-builders like ourselves tend to go by the “more is better” mindset when designing the layout.

This leads to common renovation mistakes like building the island and counter too broad, making cooking and cleaning more difficult for everyone. An airy, open, and inviting kitchen does sound enticing, but the arrangement lacks efficiency if the rest of your appliances are crammed together in the room.

Alternatively, using the working triangle theory during the planning process allows you to make your kitchen a functional space. This theory, also known as the Kitchen triangle theory, states that the position of the fridge, the sink, and the range should form an equilateral triangle.

The rationale being that these three main cooking areas in the kitchen will be somewhere you repeatedly visit, hence, it is more convenient for the user to have these three points equidistant from each other. At the end of the day, this theory is only a guideline and we encourage you to think about your own version of the working triangle.

The thought process can be spearheaded by asking yourself which spot of the kitchen you see yourself spending the most time at, then proceed to think about the overall view from there. For example, if you are someone who wishes to address your guests while cooking, placing the range in a spot where it is convenient for you to chat while cooking might be a good idea.

2. Brighten up your life

It is no exaggeration to say that lightning makes or breaks your kitchen. Although recessed lighting is still the go-to when it comes to kitchen lighting, we recommend you use surface-mount fixtures that attach themselves to the ceiling on a grid. With the fixture, the lightbulb is placed below the height of the ceiling, creating an even light that spreads across the room beautifully.

Recessed lighting, on the other hand, is not able to create a soft ambiance like fixtures. Don’t miss this opportunity to decorate your room with the array of lighting options available, hanging big light fixtures over islands is one such way you can combine functionality and beauty!

One should also plan for under-cabinet lighting in their kitchen as the cabinet obstructs the light from falling onto the countertops (additional tip: to prepare a switch along with power outlets dedicated to these lights)

3. Stove

Often thought to be the highlight of the kitchen, the stove is the most visible and frequently used appliance. If you are given the chance to replace or upgrade only one item in the kitchen, we believe that the stove should be that item. With a range of colors and styles to choose from, you can spend hours picking the stove that best fits your aesthetic.

We also recommend equipping a hood for your range to better help with ventilation and serve as a statement piece. A bronze or nickel hood will be perfect if you have the budget, or you can simply purchase one along with your stove.

4. Nothing tops the countertops

Countertops are a vital part of the kitchen — be it its style or function. Functions-wise, we recommend you to get a countertop that is around 24 to 25 inches long with a little overhang. The extra length is to prevent food sauces from dripping onto the floor instead of the cabinets in case of any accidents.

Design-wise, many often struggle to pick between solid surfacing and marble countertops. The benefits of the former lie in the fact that it can easily be repaired and can be installed in ways that prevent leftover food from getting stuck in the seams. While the charm of marble is definitely in how it wears naturally and beautifully over the years.

5. Don’t forget your cabinets

Cabinets are often overlooked when it comes to kitchen planning and one should not let this functional decorative opportunity go. Modern homemakers might prefer the open shelves style and forgo cabinet doors altogether. This allows you to see everything from your dishes to your spices while making your kitchen look more airy and stylish.

Meanwhile, the lower cabinets located beneath the counters should have a minimum of two to three deep drawers to keep your pots and pans. Having drawers gives you easy access to your frying pan as nothing gets stuck in the back, making the whole loading and unloading process smoother. These deep drawers are ultra-handy when it comes to garbage and recycling, which should happen next to the sink.

6. The functional sinks

When it comes to sinks, the most important thing to consider is the faucet. There is nothing more burdensome than having a faucet with two separate handles for hot and cold water. For the sake of convenience, the ideal faucet should be able to flip back and forth quickly, even when you are holding a dirty pan in one hand.

Next, dishwashers should be positioned according to the user’s dominant hand for easy access. It is to note that there should be counter space on the same side as well, just in case the sink gets overwhelmed with the number of dishes.

7. Flooring

There are just as many kinds of flooring as to the different types of people that exist in this universe. If you are looking for durability, a stone floor would be perfect. However, if you think you’ll spend a lot of time in the kitchen, picking wooden floors will be more comfortable to stand on.

If you are looking for an inexpensive and indestructible alternative, you can consider Italian porcelain tiles. Furthermore, these tiles have very few seams so naturally, it does not trap the food remnants that drop to the group and makes the cleaning job easy.

Conclusion

Kitchen planning can be fun, but one should set aside a budget for accommodation to stay at while the actual renovation takes place. The journey of getting your dream kitchen together is not an easy task, but fret not and set forth your kitchen planning journey with the kitchen planning tips gained from this article.
