You did it. You bought a new house! After all of the stress of house hunting, mortgage approvals, and price negotiations, you thought that the stress was over.
You were wrong.
You’ve spent the past couple of weeks stressed to the max. Ever since moving day, you can’t seem to enjoy your new home.
You have coordinated with moving companies and stared at a sea of boxes in your living room. You have built furniture with instructions printed in a language you do not speak, and you broke your mother-in-law’s China when you were unpacking the boxes in the kitchen.
If you are having trouble feeling happy at home, keep reading to learn about ways to enjoy your new home!
Focus on Sights and Smells That Comfort You
The familiar sights and smells of home are something everyone can connect to. To make your house smell like home, try out a few of these ideas:
- Bake your favorite cookies
- Light some candles in the living room
- Wash any clothes that have been sitting in a cardboard box for too long
If you are interested in finding visual ways to bring comfort to your home, try out a few of these ideas:
- Arrange your favorite blankets and pillows in your living room and bedrooms
- Hang pictures of your family and friends on the walls
- Make some art for the refrigerator (yes, even if you don’t have kids!)
There are a lot of small changes you can make to help your new house become your new home.
Stop Ordering Take-Out
You do not want to cook. You spent the day at work and then you came home to a house half-full of boxes, even though you moved in two weeks ago. That is alright!
But a great way to get back into the swing of things and to reduce new-home stress and anxiety is to live your life as normal as possible.
If you did not order take-out every night in your previous home, don’t do it here!
Your meal doesn’t have to be fancy. Find one pan and a spatula in a box and make something you can eat off of paper plates. You don’t even have to be sitting at a table!
Don’t Be Afraid to Hire Outside Help
With movers coming in and out, dust bunnies being kicked up everywhere, and you have been so busy unpacking, you haven’t mopped the kitchen floor in three weeks.
Hiring a cleaning tech from a trusted cleaning service in your area can save you the stress of having to take care of the mess in your new home. Hire a cleaning company, take your family out onto the porch for a board game, and let yourself enjoy your new home.
Explore Your New Neighborhood
Just because you have a new home does not mean you have to spend all of your time there! Take your dog to the park down the street. Bake something with your kids and share it with your surrounding neighbors. Go to a local yard sale and see what treasures you can find.
Sometimes the easiest way to make a house feel like home is to get out of it for a while!
