Perfect for holiday mornings, brunch with friends, or just treating yourself to something delicious.

Ingredients

● 1 lb breakfast sausage (use your favorite—spicy, mild, or maple)

● 8 slices of bread, cubed (day-old bread works best)

● 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix)

● 8 large eggs

● 2 1/2 cups milk

● 1/2 cup heavy cream (makes it extra rich, but you can use more milk if you want)

● 1 tsp mustard powder (optional, adds a nice tang)

● 1 tsp garlic powder

● 1/2 tsp salt

● 1/4 tsp black pepper

● 1/4 cup chopped green onions or parsley for garnish

Instructions

1. Cook the Sausage:

● Brown the sausage in a skillet over medium heat. Break it into crumbles as it cooks. Drain any grease and let it cool slightly.

2. Assemble the Casserole:

● Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

● Spread the bread cubes evenly in the dish. ( If your bread is too fresh, toast it lightly to avoid a soggy casserole.)

● Sprinkle the cooked sausage over the bread, followed by the shredded cheese.

3. Prepare the Egg Mixture:

● In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, mustard powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until smooth. (Make sure everything is well-combined, so the casserole bakes evenly.)

4. Combine and Chill:

● Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread, sausage, and cheese. Use a spoon to gently press the bread down so it soaks up the liquid.

● Cover with foil or plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.

5. Bake:

● Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) in the morning.

● Remove the casserole from the fridge and let it sit at room temperature while the oven preheats. (This helps it bake evenly.)

● Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes or until the center is set and the top is golden.

● A knife inserted into the middle should come out clean.

6. Serve:

● Let it rest for about 5-10 minutes after baking. Garnish with green onions or parsley for a pop of color.

Tips for Success

● Bread Choice: Use hearty bread like French, sourdough, or even brioche for the best texture.

● Customizing: Add veggies like diced bell peppers, mushrooms, or spinach if you want to sneak in some greens. Just sauté them before adding to the casserole.

● Cheese Variety: Swap out the cheddar for pepper jack if you want a little kick.

● Make-Ahead Magic: If you’re in a hurry, you can prep it in the morning and let it sit for just an hour before baking, but overnight soaking gives the best results.

This casserole is a crowd-pleaser every time. Pair it with fresh fruit or coffee, and you’ve got a breakfast everyone will love!
