Mistakes to Avoid Designing a Coastal Kitchen

Designing a coastal kitchen can be so much fun, but there are a few common mistakes you’ll want to avoid to keep the look feeling fresh and inviting. Here are seven mistakes to watch out for:

Going Overboard with Nautical Themes

It’s easy to get carried away with the beachy vibes, but too many anchors, ship wheels, and seashell motifs can make your kitchen feel more like a theme park than a serene retreat.

Aim for subtle, tasteful touches that evoke the coast without overwhelming the space.

Using Too Much White

While white is a staple of coastal decor, using it excessively can make your kitchen feel sterile and cold.

Balance it out with warm wood tones, soft blues, and sandy beiges to create a more welcoming, beachy atmosphere.

Neglecting Texture

Coastal kitchens thrive on texture to add depth and interest.

Don’t forget to incorporate different textures through materials like wicker, rattan, and natural wood. Textured backsplashes, like subway tiles or beadboard, can also add visual appeal.

Ignoring Practicality

While aesthetics are important, functionality shouldn’t be overlooked.

Make sure your coastal kitchen design includes plenty of storage, durable materials, and efficient layouts. After all, a beautiful kitchen is no good if it’s not practical to use.

Forgetting About Lighting

Coastal kitchens should feel bright and airy, so good lighting is key.

Don’t rely solely on natural light; incorporate a mix of task lighting, ambient lighting, and decorative fixtures to ensure your kitchen is well-lit at all times of day.

Overlooking Small Details

The small details can make a big difference in pulling your coastal kitchen together.

Pay attention to hardware, like drawer pulls and cabinet handles, and choose options that complement the coastal theme without being too obvious.

Ignoring Personal Touches

While it’s great to draw inspiration from coastal designs, don’t forget to infuse your kitchen with your own personal style.

Whether it’s a piece of art you love, a collection of beach glass, or a favorite color, make sure your kitchen feels like a reflection of you.
